Although most of our regular mineral intake occurs from food, having some mineral intake via drinking water is very beneficial. This is especially the case for calcium and magnesium, since it is quite common to have deficiencies of these essential minerals, even when eating healthy, and particularly when we eat store-bought processed foods.

Intake of essential minerals in an electrolyte form within water and beverages provides at least two different advantages: 1) the minerals get absorbed better and faster into our bodies, resulting in higher bioavailability and 2) the presence of essential mineral electrolytes improves hydration significantly, because water molecules get pulled and absorbed along with the electrolytes that are actively transported into cells. This second reason makes it very useful to have some electrolytes in drinking water, since hydration is a foundational requirement for good nutrition and health.
